Our story began with a search for balance between ancient healing traditions and modern clinical science. Between the intuitive wisdom of the natural world and the precision of formulation. Between what we feel and what we can measure. In that space of balance, Octava was created.

OUR STORY

Our philosophy was born not in a lab, but in a fight for survival.

Soon after birth, our daughter Lauryn began
experiencing up to ten absence seizures a day. These silent episodes left us helpless as we watched her struggle to breathe, her face turning blue from lack of oxygen, her eyes silently asking for help. We could only watch. Feeling helpless, we prayed every time, every day.

After four years of treatments and countless doctor visits, unfortunately Western medicine brought no noticeable relief. We turned to alternative healing and found a German practitioner who practiced Eastern medicine. He created an herbal blend that reduced her seizures by half. Sadly, he has since made his transition.

One year later, Lauryn was diagnosed with a tumor that encompassed her hippocampus, the deterioration of which generally results in
dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Terrified, as young parents, we sought numerous opinions from both Eastern and Western practitioners. On one hand was the devastating risk that in removing her hippocampus she could lose her memories, her speech, and even recognition of her family. On the other hand, if she didn't have surgery, the tumor would likely continue to spread. The doctors unanimously recommended surgery. We had no choice. She was a joyful five year old child, just a baby ... our baby.

Miraculously, after surgery, her seizures stopped. That moment transformed our understanding of healing. It revealed the power of uniting Eastern wisdom with Western medicine. We call this The Middle Path, and it became our way of life.

Years later, inspired by Lauryn’s journey, we began creating our first oil blends. They were tested by Lauryn’s brutally honest fifth grade friends. Today, Lauryn is a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Howard University, fluent in five languages, and a living embodiment of the Octava philosophy.

THE MIDDLE PATH

Most of us walk this path daily.

We nourish our bodies with natural foods like fruits and vegetables, yet we communicate through smartphones. We strive to get our steps in daily wearing high-technology shoes. We strive to ground ourselves in nature by drinking water and visiting parks, yet we board planes and trains to explore the world. We don't often think of it, but most of us practice this balance daily. We do not see these as contradictions.

We believe Skincare should be no different.

At Octava, we follow this same practice. We do not chase the "all-natural" label if it means sacrificing results, nor do we rely on harsh chemicals just because they are popular. Instead, we combine ancient botanicals with safe clinical actives. We live in our world, a world where nature and technology do not compete; they collaborate. We see them as modern balance. As learned in our journey with Lauryn, balanced collaboration can create very positive results.

People have asked us why Octava, what does it mean, what is the symbol?

On our journey with Lauryn, a spiritualist drummer looked at us and told us that we are music. We did not understand. He told us that we had a drum that beat inside of us every minute of every day. He then put his hand on his heart. He followed by saying our life experience is a lyric, our personal lyric. Our drum and our lyric make us living music.

He guided us toward African ancestral wisdom, where healing is not sterile or clinical, but rooted in vibration: breath, drumbeat, and touch. He shared that our vibration contains a number of repeated daily rituals that we often don’t think about but keep us alive. Your breath is a vibration, rising and falling with each inhale, each exhale. Your heart is a beating drum creating vibration. Your story is a moving lyric, shaped by trials, joys, memories, and daily rituals that carry you forward. And within that
combination, there is a rhythm or feeling; a vibration that is uniquely yours, your music.

He told us that our body, which carries and creates this vibration, is not just a vessel, but a sacred, living instrument. Also, when we have a good conversation with another it’s a duet, with three a trio, and in a stadium participating in an event we become part of a symphony.

We honor that instrument and its music.

Octava (pronounced Octave-Ahh) is inspired by the octave: a return to the same note, but on a higher vibration. We all have good days and bad days but we are the same person, the same instrument.

Our logo, a stylized tuning fork, reflects this
belief. Our goal at Octava is to support your instrument in creating your greatest vibration for your best music. With every ritual, we invite you to embrace your music. We support you in trusting your tone.
